Nick Gill started making sailing clothing in 1975 in a corner of his father’s textile factory in Long Eaton, England. By 1980 Gill was kitting out Lionheart, Britain’s America’s Cup challenger, and in 1989 the company launched what it describes as the world’s first two-piece dinghy suit. Gill has supplied, among others, the British Olympic Sailing Team and SailGP.
Gill develops its own fabrics. Every taped seam on its waterproof garments is pressure-tested, and metal trims are tested in salt water before they are approved. The range is organised into systems by use: OS1 Ocean, OS2 Offshore, OS3 Coastal, and ZenLite and ZenTherm for dinghy sailing.

Gill tests its fabrics and finished products in its own lab. In the hydrostatic head test a fabric fails at the first drop that comes through. Abrasion resistance is measured with the Martindale test, and the water-repellent finish is spray-tested.
Products are also tested in real use. Gill ambassadors and sailing teams wear the gear in races and on long passages, and their feedback guides product development.

OS2 Offshore is made for open water and long passages where the weather can stay rough for a long time. OS3 Coastal is a lighter suit for coastal and archipelago sailing and day sailing.
ZenLite is designed for warm weather and ZenTherm for cold. Early and late in the Nordic season ZenTherm is usually the better choice; in midsummer ZenLite is enough for most sailors.
